Rosh Chodesh Elul Retreat

Sunday August 8th 2-5pm

“In exactly one month, one revolution of the moon, you will stand before God. What will God see on that day? What will you see? This encounter can carry you significantly closer to the truth of your life. Standing in the light of God, you can see a great deal more than you ordinarily might, but only to the degree that you are already awake, only in proportion to the time and energy you have devoted to preparing for this encounter.” - z”l Rabbi Alan Lew, This is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared

Join Malkhut for an online Rosh Chodesh Elul retreat to prepare our hearts for the Days of Awe. On Sunday August 8th as the month of Elul begins, we will gather for an afternoon of meditation, chanting, prayer, mindful movement, journaling, and community. The practices and activities we engage in together will help us to set our intentions for the month of Elul, traditionally a time of intensive preparation for the High Holy Days. The retreat will be led by Emily Herzlin, and we will close with a special ritual to welcome the month of Elul, led by the Malkhut Rosh Chodesh group.

What you will need:

A journal or paper, and something to write with

A yoga or exercise mat, or a soft carpet for lying down

A comfortable seat for meditation practice

Internet connection and Zoom app (we recommend using a computer)

Whatever else you need to be comfortable (water, tea, pillows, socks, a snack, etc)

This retreat is more suited to adults and teens, but children are welcome to attend (they just might get utsy during some of the longer guided meditations). Feel free to email Emily with any questions about the schedule.

Emily is the Rabbinic Intern at Malkhut.

About Malkhut: Come be a part of our effort to build a progressive Jewish spiritual community in Western Queens (LIC, Astoria, Jackson Heights, Sunnyside, Woodside). Our vision is to transform Jewish people, fellow travelers and the world by creating connections to each other, to the One and to our greater community. We practice ecstatic, musical, and contemplative prayer, mindfulness meditation through a Jewish lens, study of Jewish sources, and social justice work. We are striving to build an open, inclusive community of spiritual seekers, especially for those who may not have found a home in more conventional religious settings. We want to be community composed of Jewish individuals of all ages, fellow travelers, families with kids, interfaith couples, Jews of color, LGBTQ folks, and curious seekers. We are creating a space that honors the inspiration and meaning that so many Jews have found in many eastern spiritual traditions, and our doors are open to those from other faith traditions who find meaning in Judaism.

PARDES SPIRITUALITY RETREAT: AWAKENING THE DIVINE

PARDES SPIRITUALITY RETREAT: AWAKENING THE DIVINE

The Spirituality Retreat will run from January 2-7, 2018 at the Capital Retreat Center.

More info and register

In partnership with Or HaLev, the Institute for Jewish Spirituality and The NYU Center for Global Spiritual Life

The Psalms teach that the human soul is the light of God, illuminating our hearts and minds, our actions and relationships, for the Divine to enter. This retreat, held in North America, offers the opportunity for a sacred pause, enabling us to open ourselves to the joy and presence which is our divine nature and take that awakening back with us into our everyday lives. It provides the skills necessary to transform the sometimes muffled, tense or distracted experience of our lives into an open-hearted engagement with every moment. It offers the opportunity to touch that still, small voice within each of us and the soul-wisdom which is our birthright. It transforms our Jewish practice and lives into a deep mode of spiritual awakening.

Combining prayer, mindfulness meditation, silence, text study, group work and other modes of spiritual practice, this retreat will introduce participants to the profound depths of Jewish spirituality and offer the possibility of finding life-transforming meaning in the Jewish tradition. Mornings of the retreat will be spent in silence and meditation, including meditation instruction and questions and answers, with a transition in the afternoon and evening into mindful speaking, group activities and text study before returning to silence before bed. Evenings will include opportunities for teachings, sharing, art and activities. The retreat will conclude with a deep celebration of Shabbat, helping participants experience one of Judaism’s most important spiritual practices. At the conclusion of the retreat, the teachers will provide participants with resources and techniques to continue practicing and growing in their universities and home communities.

What This Course Will Teach You

Meditation 201: Softening the Heart is a six-week course designed to build upon practices introduced in Meditation 101.

Each class will explore a different topic. Topics may include: lovingkindness, self-compassion, joy, gratitude, and forgiveness. The practices we will be exploring in this course help us to cultivate qualities of mind and heart that reduce stress, build resiliency and flexibility, and improve wellbeing. The course teaches meditation techniques, practices, and tools that will support you in cultivating a personal meditation practice that you can carry with you throughout your day.

How The Course Is Structured

At least one new meditation practice will be introduced every week. During class there will be time for discussion about the meditation practice and how to apply it to daily life.

You will be asked to meditate on your own for 10-20 minutes per day and to jot down observations in a daily practice journal. The home practice is meant to support you. You will get more benefit out of the course if you practice consistently on your own. You will be given printed meditation instructions to support your home practice.

This is a group class with a maximum of 10 participants. It will be conducted in English.

Wear comfortable clothing. You may choose to sit in a chair or to use our cushions or yoga mats.

Who Is This Class For?

Graduates of the Meditation 101 course offered at MSK.

Cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and staff.

Those who have not completed Meditation 101 but have a regular meditation practice of at least 2 months may also enroll.

Contact The Instructor If…

If you have not taken Meditation 101, but have a meditation practice and would like to enroll, please email one of the instructors (listed below) to introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your experience with meditation.

New York Insight offers on-going classes in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), the ground-breaking and time-tested, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School.   This transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives.

The teaching of MBSR at NY Insight is offered by seasoned MBSR teachers, most of whom are certified by the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness.  All of our teachers have decades of meditation practice and study and between them have taught well over 200 cycles of this seminal 8-Week curriculum.

In addition, New York Insight is committed to providing support for alumni of MBSR Programs in the form of follow-up courses, access to teachers and sitting groups.

Benefits of MBSR
Research over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life.

Some of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses

  • Practical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations
  • Methods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease
  • Gentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension
  • The ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness
  • The ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease
  • Greater ability to decrease the physical, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism, racism, homophobia

What to Expect
MBSR uses meditation, yoga and inquiry as a way of training people to relate differently to stresses in their lives and in fact, relate differently to each moment of their lives

This class is in 8 weekly 2 ½ hour sessions.  Between classes 5 and 7 there is a full day of practice on a weekend day. Each class includes various “formal” meditation practices, mindful movement and discussion/inquiry exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress.

Class size ranges from 15 – 30 participants. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met, a supportive and safe container is created.

Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of formal meditation daily as well as various informal practices.

Course Fee & Requirements

  • Sliding scale: Base $450/ Sustaining $600
  • Please choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need. Payment plans and limited partial scholarships are available; please contact info@nyimc.org for financial assistance.
  • It is important when considering this class to make sure your schedule allows you to attend all 8 sessions, though if a class is missed there are usually concurrent classes which allow for make-up sessions.

Cultivating Loving Presence (6-week course, in person and online)

Cultivating Loving Presence (6-week course, in person and online)

It can be incredibly challenging to stay present while communicating with others. We can enter a communication with the best intentions and get so easily thrown off course by judgment, blame, fear, and our many familiar habitual patterns of reactivity.

In this course we will learn how to bring our meditation practice into speaking and listening to others and how to stay grounded in the body during communication; explore and get to know our own familiar blocks to listening; learn about Buddhist ethical guidelines on wise speech; practice speaking and listening in pairs during class as a mindfulness practice; and most importantly, we will explore together how we might bring an attitude of love and care into even our difficult communications.

In this course we will work with MBSR tools and practices to renew and refresh our commitment to formal and informal daily mindfulness and meditation practice. We will examine what we learned in MBSR in light of our present life circumstances--how are these teachings showing up in our lives now? How are the practices beneficial to us now? How can we continue to deepen our practice and understanding?

This class will emphasize regularly connecting with our intentions, and cultivating an attitude of kindness, compassion, and forgiveness towards ourselves and others.

We will continue to work with the MBSR practices (body scan, awareness of breath, mindful walking, mindful movement, open awareness, mindful communication) and introduce new meditation practices as applicable to the group.

This course is open to all MBSR alumni. You are welcome to enroll regardless of when, where, or with whom you took MBSR.

If you are interested in taking this course but have not taken MBSR, you may qualify to take this course if you have a daily mindfulness meditation practice of at least 3 months. Please contact Emily to set up a phone interview to determine whether the course is right for you: emily.herzlin@gmail.com

Minimum 8 participants to run the course, maximum 18.
